Blue is the night

8th March 2019 By Radka Leave a Comment

“What color is the night?” my older son once asked me. I said, “blue”. But then we started to talk about it. We were thinking about the night in the city, the yellowish neon light shining from signs, reddish car light lining the streets, orange street lamps light falling on pavements, flickering blue light from TV screens, purple lights in jazz and blues bars.

Color comes from light

Color is born from light. All the different lights at night create all variety of colors.

But if we ask “What color is the night?”, we probably don’t ask about all these colors that we can see at night. We might be asking quite a different question.

We might want to dive into our emotions, into our souls, into our hearts and find how the night feels for us. What does night mean for us? How does it resonate? What is it hiding for us?

Blue is the night

Today for me the night is blue. Calm, deep, meditative blue. Deep as the ocean. Calm as a pair of beautiful blue eyes of a friend. Meditative, since you can have rest after a long busy day, lying on the bed, listening to silence. Your mind at peace.

Just another morning

Artist's Colouring Book page colouring in a cafe

“It is dark. It is cold. I am lying in bed looking at the ceiling. Suddenly our little boy stirs, makes a funny sound and starts climbing to our bed his eyes closed. He snuggles between me and my husband and falls asleep again. I am lying next to him stroking his hair gently not to wake him up. I love this morning ritual.

It is an early winter morning and time for me to get up. Very quietly I sneak out of our bedroom. I put my clothes on in the kitchen, pick up a small backpack and leave. The flat is silent. Everyone is asleep.

It is very windy outside. My hair gets immediately windswept. There are not many people in the street. A woman walking her dog. A car pulling out and driving off. The sky is brightening. I pass an old church attached to a monastery. It’s a beautiful sight, two spiky towers and black lines of bare trees against the sky at dawn. Reaching into my pocket, I pull out my phone and take a snapshot. How many times have I taken this photo?  Still, I cannot resist.

Walking up the street, I pass Yoga Shala. It belongs to my Yoga teacher Denisa. That’s where I should go. But not this time.

A small bakery on the corner is already selling fresh bread and rolls. I  pick up some rolls for my boys. The lovely smell and warmth of the bakery embrace me,  a small warm morning hug. All my senses are fully awake now. The sky is getting brighter.

Steps lead me to a nearby cafe. There is a table by a window and staff who know that I will order a cappuccino.

I put my coat down. The street outside is getting busy with morning commuters. I open my backpack and take out a drawing pad, pencils, and Copic pens. Soft cafe music, an intermittent sound of the coffee machine, little chats, the trams’ noise as they hurry across the square.

I check the clock. How much time do I have? Almost two hours. Good. It’s time to start.”

Back on track and what else is part of the process

Summer sketching landscape with crayons

Returning to my website last week was a nasty surprise for me. I found out that my site was hacked and after some digging into the issues I realized that the best way to ‘fix’ it would be to delete it completely and start from fresh. Today I can say I am back on track. But it did not feel like that at the start.

Initially, it was very depressing. Then I started to realise that it might be a great opportunity to refresh my websites’ look and feel and improve lots of other things as well. Apart from securing my site better for the future as well as backing it up more frequently it also brought me back to the question ‘Why am I doing this?’

Why am I doing this?

The great thing about having to go back is that it makes me think again about the process and what it is I really want. What is my aim here apart from sharing what I create? After I went through the initial feeling of being angry with the hacker, then I felt sorry for myself, but soon I started to feel grateful. Now I feel thankful for his or her cheeky act. Because it was like a good kick in the ass. It is a reminder, a voice saying, ‘hey, either you are here for the long run, or just give it up, because it is not worth the hassle’.

And with art, I am here for the long run no matter what. It is something that started when I got my first colour pencils and markers at a very young age. And it will end only… Well, as long as I am here it is not ending because it is who I am.

Incubating time

So as well as rebuilding the site I am going through my drawings, paintings, sketches, and writing down many ideas about what I would love to do next. It is very exciting actually. Some sort of ‘incubating’ time period.

Oh, and this week my exhibition in AdAstra is ending and I will be preparing my paintings and prints for the customers who bought them. And I will be wrapping them, photographing them, shipping them. Three large paintings were especially popular. So I decided to make them available as prints so that more people can enjoy them in their homes. You can order them either by emailing me at radka[at]radkazimovaking.com or from my online shop. Enjoy your day and don’t forget to get back on track in case you got off it! 🙂
